Howto get an OSx like KDE 4.*
Most
of
the Linux users will love getting their kde4 enviroument
looking MAC OSx like. This is very easy. To get your kde4 to look like
mac osx first you will need a bespin. What is Bespin? We all know about
Baghira ( OSx like style for kde). Unfortunately Baghira supports KDE
3.* . Bespin is the new project, for KDE 4.*
Are you ready? Ok Lets get started. This tutorisal will explain you
everything in a couple single steps :
- Download Bespin. You can find it HERE.
To download it you will need a svn
- Compile Bespin : There are pretty well explained
instructions on the offical website.
--svn
co https://cloudcity.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/cloudcity - This
command will download the sources to a "cloudcity" directory wherever
you have typed the command ( usually /home directory). After you enter
the home direcotory execute
-- ./configure - It is
going to ask you
2
questions where you can answer with "Y" or "N" . After the configuring
is done enter the
"build" directory and execute
-- make && sudo make install
-- After this is done go to "System
Settings"
--> "Appearance" --> "Style" and select "Bespin". After
selecting
this you can configure it
. Make the settings as you like.
-- Next go to "System Settings" -->
"Appearance"
--> "Windows" and select "Bespin". Configure how the
windows
are going to look like.
Ok
after we have half of the system looking Mac OSx like, now we need the
colours and the icons set. A nice set of icons can be found in
kde-look.org . For this example We are using "Alien OSx" ( a nice set
of Osx icons). Download it from
HERE.
after you have downloaded the icons go to "System Settings" -->
"Appearance" --> "Icons" and install the theme from path. When
you
install it you are going to see that for the Kmenu instead of the blue
apple the is one "K". To fix this just untar the archive and replace
the icon. You will need to replace
"**dir**/64x64/actions/start.png" with
"**dir**/64x64/apps/kmenu2.png". After you apply the icons have to see
something like this :
.
Go
to
"System Settings" --> "Appearance" --> "Colors"
--> "Get a New Theme" , Select and Install "Elegant Bespin"
- Add the apple (KMenu) and menubar in the top to be more Mac
Osx Like
To
do
that remove all panels and add just one in the top of the
screen. After that add "Kmenu" (either classic, either modern") in the
left part of the panel, after that add a widget called "XBar". This
widget comes with Bespin. After that just add system tray and whatever
else you are going to need! Now konqueror and other applications that
comes with kde-meta package will be all right.
REMEMBER: Right at that moment XBar works only with QT4 and KDE4 applications, so GTK ones like "Mozilla" are not going to work! Other 3rd party
applications you will have to recompile in order to see the menus in
the top panel.
- Right Click on the Desktop and Select "Appearance Settings"
and there the current theme is "Transperant Grey" ( You can download
and install it with clicking the button "Install New Theme")
- Get the OSx like application launcher
To
get it you will need either "KoolDock" either "AWN - Avant Window
Navigator". This Example it with AWN. Kooldock works with KDE 4.* but
it is designed for kde 3.* and in order to have it up on 100% you will
have to edit some of the code, because is looking the application in
another directory. To get AWN up and working you will need AIGLX
(3D
acceleration). If you use KWin you will need to enable desktop effects
(
"System Settings" --> "Desktop") and to make the settings are
apropriate
for your Video Device. After the 3D acceleration is up and running
install (Installation depends on the Distribution - AWN is available in
the main three on every distribution) and start AWN. To get AWN more
OSx like install the MAC OSx
like theme. You can find it into the package "mac4lin". This package is
designed for gnome but download it from HERE
, because you can still use some stuff from it.Untar the archive and
install AWN's MAC OSx like theme. After you are done with this settings
its time to start adding applications to AWN. Click on the dock with
Right Button of the mouse and go to "Dock Preferences" -->
"Launchers" and start adding programs. Use the custom set of icons that
you downloaded fro kde-look.org. There is everything you need! All the
icons for the applications. When you are done your KDE have
to
have a similar look :
The Archive that you downloaded (mac4lin)
has a nice set of OSx Leopard Wallpapers that you can use. Untar the
wallpapers archive and go to the Desktop --> Right Click with
the mouse and hit "Appearance Settings" Select "Slideshow", remove the
default directory and add the directory that you just untared! And you
are all set and ready to go with OSx like Desktop Enviroument.
