Howto Boot Pentoo Live CD 2009
Booting
up the LiveCD on Toshiba Satelite and Acer Aspire.
Dolnwload the pentoo-2009-beta.iso. Burn it with Nero Burning Rom (
Windows ) and K3B ( Linux).
After the cd is burned leave it in the CD-ROM and reboot. Select Boot
Options in BIOS : "Boot From CD/DVD".
After the CD is booted you will see the "
root"
shell."
NOTE: For Nvidia GeForce 7000M
you will have to
edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf the Video Driver section. Change it from "nv"
to "vesa". The Network interfaces are down by default. You can
configure them by simply tiping livecd
#
net-setup "interface" - eth0
for Ethernet and
wlan0 for wireless device. Pentoo LiveCD features the drivers from
Gentoo kernel version 2.6.28-r4 , so if you PC/Laptop is not the latest
model with the latest parts you should be fine. By executing net-setup
"interface" you will run an configure script that is going to ask you a
few questions about the network and the interface that is going to be
configured. From all the options you will have the opportunity to do it
manual or selecting DHCPCD to do it for you. Well the fastest way is to
get DHCPCD doing it for you..When the configuration is done check if it
is correct by tiping ifconfig. For ethernet device plug in the cable
and check if you are connected by pinging something :
livecd #
ping -c 1 www.google.com
If your ping is successful, you are good. For wireless devices just run
"iwlist scan" and you will see all the available networks and the
information that you need to connect. If you don't know how to connect
check the article (HOWTO connect to wireless network without X). There
are also some nice apps for connecting to Wireless network in X. After
you have the network configured it is time for creating user :
~$
useradd -m -G users , audio , wheel "username"
Now create a password for the user :
~$
passwd "username"
Pick up a strong password containing capital letter lower case , number
and symbol. After setting up the user : ~$
su "username"
and
~$
startx
You will be greated by "Enlighnment" desktop enviroument. If your sound
card is not detected on boot you can configure it with "alsaconf" ,
~$
su
Passowrd:
livecd #
alsaconf

The E17 desktop enviroument is pretty impressive. It is light and has
really user-friendly interface.
If there is an application that is not included in the LiveCD you can
always emerge it. For example to check for properly working microfone
and speakers I decided to use skype:
livecd #
emerge -pv skype -pv options are
for checking
if there are any blocks or unsatified packages. After emerge is done,
run skype and call someone to test the sound and the mic. If everything
works fine you are all set and ready to enjoy that powerful
distribution. There is also options to save your configuration and
settings on you external hard drive or usb.
Full features of Players , Browser and Regular user applications , Open
Office.org and so on...
There are also a lot of security and penetrating applications included,
some of them GUI. From port scanners and password crackers to firewall
and exploits.
CONCLUSION : This is a very nice and lightweight combination of
penetrating weapon and Desktop PC.
