Introducion :
"A good Koala knows how to see the wood for the trees, even when her
head is in the clouds. Ubuntu aims to keep free software at the
forefront of cloud computing by embracing the API’s of Amazon
EC2, and
making it easy for anybody to setup their own cloud using entirely open
tools. We’re currently in beta with official Ubuntu base
AMI’s for use
on Amazon EC2. During the Karmic cycle we want to make it easy to
deploy applications into the cloud, with ready-to-run appliances or by
quickly assembling a custom image. Ubuntu-vmbuilder makes it easy to
create a custom AMI today, but a portfolio of standard image profiles
will allow easier collaboration between people doing similar things on
EC2."
------Ubuntu Developers
It's October 2009 and the new Ubuntu 9.10 the Karmic Koala is here. Now
we start wondering why os this release numberes 9.10? Well, the answer
is pretty simple, the first Ubuntu release (Warty Warthog) was in
october 2004 so ots version is 4.10. This release is in October 2009,
so its version number is 9.10.
Installation :
Let's take e look over the installation proccess: It is so simplyfied
that every kid can install Ubuntu ( All you have to do is to select
language, time zone and a couple times "Forward") Ubuntu found the
drivers on autodetect, even that my sound and LAN card are not so well
supported the new release did a good job. During the installation it
asked for username and password, just to give it a try I insurted a 6
characted password and the installer warn me that this password is weak
and even gave me an option to change the password or to leave it like
that! Everything works great so far.
First Boot && Packages :
The first Boot was pretty fast:)
The standart Desktop Enviroument is GNOME version 2.28.1 ( a little
tweaked interface ) with build
date just a couple of days ago. The new release comes with all the
necessary programs that you need daily (Empathy (IM Client), Firefox
Web Browser, Trasmission BitTorrent Clien, Open Office Org,
Disktionary, GIMP Image Editor, F - Spot Photo Manager, Calculator,
Disk Burning tool, Rhythmbox Music Player, Sound Recorder and Totem as
a movie player and Ubuntu One ). There is one great option at the end
of the menu
"Ubuntu Software Center".
If you are running the Software center for first time you
will
have to go to "Edit ---> Software Sources" and select the
closest to
your location server.
After setting everything up, you can start installing packages.
Installing packages is so easy:
1. Browse the category you are interested in ( there are a couple
thousand packages in the official sources). ( I went to "Internet" and
start looking for something fancy:) I choose Firestarter (GUI for
iptables)
2. Then just click "Install"
3. Wait till the installer does the job for you
4. Run you application
The Ubuntu One is client comes installed by default under
the
Applications>Internet menu. The application allows
registered users
to share files between Ubuntu computers by simply dragging and dropping
them into a folder in their home directory, or through a web interface.
Conclusion :
The new Ubuntu release looks very promising and certeainly helps the
migration progress. What migration ? Of course from Closed Source
software to an open source one!
